How time fly’s ! Christmas is on the doorstep with New Year 2019 just around the corner.
The past year has had many dramas along with some VERY traumatic times, plus normal ups and downs however the worst part has been dumping of kittens, seeming like hundreds being reported via Face Book, emails, messages from GCWS UK coming thick and fast, sadly we could do very little.
Our funds just cannot run to looking after kittens, our finances are fragile enough dealing with sick and injured cats.
The problem is getting the message out there to the locals who are just not dealing with the source of the problem, their female cats. With all the neutering completed by us alone 3269 to date, along with other charities that come here 2-3 times per year, possibly six – eight thousands cats have been neutered, so why all these kittens????
It is a mystery although other charities in UK and abroad, reported they were also in the same situation… Round & round it goes….
October / November TNR was slow and steady once the tourist season ended we were invited to trap & neuter in some hotels, with the proviso all cats were returned !!! Now that is a BIG step forward.
A couple of untimely storms held us up for a few days but volunteers continued trapping in Kremasti, Rhodes Old Town, Lachania, Glystra plus approximately 12 strays from a young colony close to the clinic in Kiotari.. Totalling 168 over 9 weeks
In actual fact this year many hotels and some businesses have asked us NOT to allow their cats or kittens to be adopted, they want and need them on their premises which is terrific…
The onus now being on the person interested in taking the cat, they MUST enquire as to whether or not owners / management will permit adoption.
Gone are the days when we could walk in take a cat and whisk it away to a foreign country…
Although with that said, this year we have managed to assist 14 agreed adoptions worldwide.
November was the start of our fund raising season with our first event being the annual car boot sale,
unfortunately as we couldn’t move the date we clashed with the Run for Cancer being held in Rhodes Town. Thankfully we still had an excellent turnout raising over 500 euros…
Inevitably the money didn’t last long, the very next day volunteer Mara trapped & neutered 18 x cats in Old Rhodes Town – money gone !!!!!
However that same day we received fantastic news, UK supporters Lesley & Leon Morgan held a cabaret/ dinner on our behalf, raising the amazing sum of £645 !!!!!! Thank you Lesley & Leon
Another fund raiser for our TNR program was held by the local Cat Lovers uniting to hold a Puurrrfect cat brunch, raising a few more euros for our feline friends.
However not a very pleasant day weather wise but our supporters certainly got into the swing of things, wearing anything cat related….
As Christmas draws in, time is running out to purchase those odd little gifts, with that in mind we would like to suggest these lovely strong hessian bags designed and available from Emma Trim £15 inc UK postage. Order via email firstname.lastname@example.org
